[et al.] in U.S. brig Porpoise, schooners Maria & Hadassah, by order of the Hon. Mahlon Dickerson, Secretary of the Navy ; drawn by J. Alden and W. May ; engraved by S. Stiles, Sherman & Smith, New-York. It was published under direction of the Navy Commissioners in 1837. Scale [ca. 1:62,000]. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the 'World Mercator' projection. All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows hydrographic features such as as banks, shoals, bottom soil types, tide information, and more. Relief shown by soundings. Includes notes. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from the Harvard Map Collection and the Harvard University Library as part of the Open Collections Program at Harvard University project: Organizing Our World: Sponsored Exploration and Scientific Discovery in the Modern Age.     Summary: This layer is a georeferenced image of a map of Lima originally published in 1865. The historic map layers in the Google Earth Rumsey Map Collection have been selected by David Rumsey from his large collection of historical maps, as well as some from other collections with which he collaborates. All the maps contain rich information about the past and represent a sampling of time periods, scales, and cartographic art, resulting in visual history stories that only old maps can tell. Each map has been georeferenced by Rumsey, thus creating unique digital map images that allow the old maps to appear in their correct places on the modern globe. Some of the maps fit perfectly in their modern spaces, while othersgenerally earlier period mapsreveal interesting geographical misconceptions of their time. Cultural features on the maps can be compared to the modern satellite views using the slider bars to adjust transparency. The result is an exploration of time as well as space, a marriage of historic cartographic masterpieces with innovative contemporary software tools.

  4. Title: International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean, 500-Meter Resolution GeoTIFF (Version 3.0)

    Summary: This layer is a georeferenced image (GeoTIFF) of a digital bathymetric model (DBM) compiled with all multibeam, dense single beam and land data added at 500 x 500 meters resolution. The original (DBM) was compiled with all multibeam, dense single beam and land data added at 500 x 500 m resolution in a final step using the remove-restore method. Data were compiled from several multibeam cruises in the region dating from 1994 to 2011. The goal of this initiative is to develop a digital data base that contains all available bathymetric data north of 64° North, for use by mapmakers, researchers, institutions, and others whose work requires a detailed and accurate knowledge of the depth and the shape of the Arctic seabed.
