  1. Title: Street Trees (Town of Brookline)

    Contributors:

Summary: The Street Trees layer is a point coverage inventory of each street tree in the Town of Brookline. Attributes described include species, diameter, condition, management need, growing conditions, predominant root zone cover, presence of utility or power lines, location (on the street or in a park), etc. The Brookline Street Tree Inventory was initially conducted in 1994 as a cooperative project of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, U.S. Forest Service, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management, and the Town of Brookline; other supporting organizations include the Harvard University Arnold Arboretum and the Brookline Green Space Alliance. The Town agencies involved in the project include the Conservation Commission, Tree Planting Committee, and the Department of Public Works. This project, thought to be the first comprehensive municipal street tree inventory based on GIS, recruited and trained over 100 citizens to perform the inventory. Teams of volunteers were assigned areas of the town in which to locate each street tree on the Town's Assessor's Maps for digitizing at a later time by UMass/Amherst.

  4. Title: Bailey's Ecoregions and Subregions of the United States, 2004

    Contributors:

Summary: This polygon shapefile is commonly called Bailey's ecoregions and shows ecosystems of regional extent in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Four levels of detail are included to show a hierarchy of ecosystems. The largest ecosystems are domains, which are groups of related climates and which are differentiated based on precipitation and temperature. Divisions represent the climates within domains and are differentiated based on precipitation levels and patterns as well as temperature. Divisions are subdivided into provinces, which are differentiated based on vegetation or other natural land covers. The finest level of detail is described by subregions, called sections, which are subdivisions of provinces based on terrain features. Also identified are mountainous areas that exhibit different ecological zones based on elevation. This layer is part of the 1997-2014 edition of the National Atlas of the United States. These data are intended for geographic display and analysis at the national level, and for large regional areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:7,500,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by the National Atlas of the United States in the use of these data. U. S. Produced by the United States Department of Agriculture, United States Forest Service. ----- COVERAGE PROCESSING METHODOLOGY: The fpb_lakes shapefile data set was produced, using ArcView's GeoProcessing Wizard, by merging the data sets Lakes, Sn_lakes and Lakes_24k together. Lakes was the specified data set upon which Sn_lakes and Lakes_24k were merged. EDITS TO LAKES The edits made to Lakes.shp were removal of duplicate polygons. Polygons that were duplicates of polygons in Sn_lake.shp were removed. Deletion based upon the following criteria: Sn_lakes.shp was digitized at 1:24,000 and Lakes.shp was digitized at 1:100,000. The edits made to Lakes.dbf were removal of the fields Lakes_ and Lakes_id. Both fields were generated, populated and used by the original ARC/INFO lakes coverage. Lakes_id was re-created and re-populated in ArcView to represent unique IDs for the lakes. __ EDITS TO SN_LAKES The sn_lakes data set was obtained as an ARCINFO e00 file from the USDA Forest Service through the California Department of Forestry then converted to an ArcView shapefile. Edits made to sn_lakes.shp was the deletion of land polygons. Criteria for deletion was based upon the Sn_lakes.dbf. Records with 0 in the Water Field were removed. 0s indicated land. The edits made to sn_lakes.dbf were the deletion of Lakes_id, Lcode and Cff_code fields. Lakes_id was generated, populated and used by the original ARC/INFO sn_lakes coverage. Lakes_id was re-created and re-populated in ArcView to represent unique ids for the lakes. Lcode identified water body types, Lakes; Island; Reservoir; and River. This information was reclassified in the Water field. Cff_code was generated from the integer codes of Geometronics CFF files. The 'Name' field was created and populated using USGS 7.5' topographic quads. ----- DESCRIPTION AND LOCATION OF RELATED ORIGINAL DATA SETS: ABSTRACT fpb_lakes was produced by merging the data sets Lakes, Sn_Lakes and Lakes_24k together.
